Blue Lagoon Iceland Geothermal Spa
Beauty - but don't forget the beast..
The Blue Lagoon is beautiful, there's no denying that.
I was transported from the BSI to the Blue Lagoon and had purchased the comfort package for 2000 (8pm) which includes a face mask and a drink. There is a separate building in front where you can check your luggage. I didn't know it existed but I'm glad it's there and that I saw it because there would've been no place for it inside the lagoon. I grabbed what I needed and checked the bag, I don't remember the cost but I paid when I picked it up at the end of the night. I believe the luggage place is open until 2300 (11pm).
I walked to the Blue Lagoon.. of course they have a dramatic entryway that is also beautiful. It was quite windy but I made it to the entrance and there was a long line to get in. One of the staff members addressed us all as a group and gave us instructions about the wristbands and how things worked. Eventually I got my wristband and headed to the locker room. You really need to shower sans bathing suit and that includes your crotch area. This was explained to me by a local before I went and the reasoning is that they cannot use as much chlorine or other chemicals to keep the water clean and with how busy that place gets everyone needs to do their part to keep it gorgeous (this is true of all geothermal pools in Iceland). They do have a private changing area and private showers complete with soap and conditioner. You are provided with a towel (so if wearing just a towel makes you uncomfortable either bring your own robe - I wouldn't - or buy the premium package which includes the robe and an additional face mask). The lockers are a little weird to figure out but once I did mine worked fine and I had no issues. Don't forget to take all of your jewelry off.
I headed to the water and it was packed. I had only a little daylight left so I recommend that you GO EARLY. You can stay as long as you like, your time slot is only your entry time. I regret having such a late slot but it was the only thing that worked with my schedule.
Another tip- go on your way to or from the airport. You will want to shower afterward (which you can do there if you want) and also rinse your bathing suit out. It is closer to the airport than Reykjavik so you'll waste valuable trip time if you don't schedule correctly.
So, I said it was windy, right? I brought a waterproof phone case specifically for this outing but of course I forgot it in my luggage. They have them available for purchase for 3000ISK (around $30) and I had no choice because the wind was spraying water everywhere. The wind was also making waves and when it got dark it was DARK. There were some lights but it just felt kind of weird being there in the dark and I wasn't really sure what the vibe was since I hadn't spent enough time there in the day to see the length or depth of the lagoon.
The water was absolutely gorgeous and perfectly warm. I'm not someone who fancies a hot tub but this was perfect for me, maybe due to the wind? There were some spots where the water seemed warmer. The water wasn't too high or too low either and the lagoon itself appeared actually quite large. There were multiple bridges and a little cave even.
I tried the Iceland beer (Gull) for my free drink at a swim up bar (which is where I got the phone case) and then for your complimentary mask you get the silica mask which is available at a little mask bar area in the water. It is staffed so you can ask questions about the different masks and about the water or whatever else. Everything you purchase you use your wristband and then pay on your way out. If you wanted to be out of the water it didn't seem like there was a lot of free space to sit, the place was VERY busy. Also, due to the wind, towels and robes were everywhere.
I didn't try the restaurant and I didn't really see the whole place but overall I will agree that it is a must do if you don't care about doing touristy things. The place is truly beautiful but everyone knows about it and therefore it is very busy. Would I go back? Hard to say. Maybe during an off season? I'd like to visit another geothermal pool before I decide whether or not it's worth the massive crowd.
