Do A Döner

12 September 2018; Wednesday

Munich, Germany

It was raining in London this morning, same as when I left Iceland. I’ll tell myself everyone’s just sad I’m leaving.

I was so tired I went to the wrong side of the plane and a guy was sitting there so I said excuse me and he moved so I sat down and put my bag under the seat and when I looked up I realized I was on the wrong side like an IDIOT (but I also don’t know why that guy let me kick him out of his own seat...). Then I got stuck next to a girl who refused to put her phone in airplane mode and also left her email noise on. I’m gonna say I was extra irritable because I was tired.

BB and Danielle left Boston yesterday for Italy and they had a layover for a hot second in Munich so we shared the same airspace for maybe like five minutes. I thought that was really cool although I wish my plane would’ve landed earlier so I could’ve run to their gate to say hi!

Customs took about an hour and it was a little bit of a cluster. Also a little embarrassing because this lady kept yelling about how she wasn’t going to let people in front of her because she lives in Dallas but she’s from New York and that’s not how things work. You can’t see but I’m rolling my eyes. It was okay though because I met a girl from Minnesota and we laughed about how crazy she was and that we’re all going to the same place so it’s no worries.

Guest blogger here!!!! It’s-a meeee, Erica!!!!

So Melissa took the S-Bahn from the airport to the München Hauptbahnhof aka the Munich central station. She was dropped off directly in front of a Starbucks, how fitting!!!! I arrived at basically the same time and we “reunited and it felt so good!”

Folks, let me tell you how lucky I am to know this lil lady. I’ve lived in Germany for 6 years now and she is one of 3 visitors I’ve had...and the only one that has visited more than once. She is the true example of what a forever friend is. Whether we live in the different cities, different states or different countries, it doesn’t matter. We are always there for each other and for that I am truly grateful!!!! So Melissa, thank you for the visit, thank you for the fun times and the laughs and thank you for spending part of your EuroTrip basically just straight chillin. I will always think back on these times with a smile! ILYMINLW! You will now be returned to your regularly scheduled blogger.....

And now I’m back.. like I never left! (I never left)...[Macklemore-Glorious]

Okay!

So we locked my luggage away and then we got our Starbucks and our Starbucks selfie (and also our Toms shoe selfie). On to lunch!

Erica and I talk quite a bit on WhatsApp so in general I know what types of things she’s eating and she will once in a while mention a Döner Kebap, a Turkish gyro type sandwich. I think the word “döner kebap” (‘do-nuh kay-bop or kay-bob’) is fun to say and I wanted to try this meal she speaks of so one of my requests for our time together was to have a vegetarian döner and SHE FOUND ONE (with help from her/Marko’s cousin René)! I was VERY excited and I think that might be an understatement. IT. WAS. EVERYTHING! And I am so happy I got to try it! I think one of the funnest things about visiting someone you know overseas is just to do their everyday life with them and see what it’s like to be enveloped in that country for the day.

Anyway, we next walked through the city center and past some very cool looking old buildings, one of which hosts the football (soccer) team (Bayern Munchen) when they win. Our next stop was Hofbräuhaus, a Biergarten dating back to the 16th century. This I was also very excited about! Frequent visitors keep personal beer steins under lock and key! It’s very neat! We sat outside and enjoyed a maß (one litre) of radler (it’s like a shandy) each! I loved every second of it. There were some people behind us playing phase 10 and we also saw a guy wearing a tigers hat - home is never far away!

Next we visited an outdoor market (Viktualien Markt) full of fruits, vegetables, plants, and more! My favorite were these artichokes that had flowered.. bees really seemed to like them and would walk around in the middle.

At this point we headed to the train station to catch a train to Ingolstadt where Marko and Karl were waiting!!! Karl greeted us at the top of the stairs and even gave me a hug and a kiss on the cheek! After Karl went to sleep we went downstairs to visit with Martin and E&MZ’s neighbors William and Carole! I had some delicious wine, käse (cheese) bread rolls, and some of Erica’s Chex Mix before we all parted ways and headed to bed. It was good to be in Germany with my friends!
