Munich, Germany
In the morning Erica and I woke up around 9. Marko was at work and Erica found out she had to be at school for a few hours so I rested a little, had some cereal, and painted my nails while she was gone.
When she returned we went for a 5k run/walk, I fared okay but I wish I felt more in shape.. It’s such a long process to get your fitness back and it is frustrating- all the more reason not to lose it in the first place.
I got to wash two loads of laundry at her place, very thankful for that!!! Then I checked out the Oktoberfest site for fun & found a sweatshirt I wanted.
Marko left work early and off we went.. Erica in her lederhosen and myself in what they let me borrow :) I love these guys! I was very tempted to buy a dirndl, the traditional Bavarian dress, but I refrained.
We arrived in Munich by train (they live about an hour north of Munich) and walked down the street to the 182nd Oktoberfest. It was EVERYTHING I thought it would be. I LOVED a every second of it. It’s basically a huge street carnival sponsored by people who make beer and get you to drink it in giant tents with live folk bands.
Marko got fish on a stick, I had a veggie burger, and Erica had corn and some nuts I think. The nuts were delicious!! And the bathrooms weren’t that bad at all, I was expecting much worse. We snuck into Löwenbräu House tent through an exit and we were seated at a reserved table, the guests of which were told that we had reserved as well. It was AWESOME. They were very nice to us and welcoming, except when we spilled beer on them ;) Which was only like twice. And only my fault once.
The beer comes in one size, 1 liter glasses, and I think it’s called a maß. I made it through four of them and felt pretty awesome about it. Erica had sort of taught me one of the main drinking songs, Ein Prosit, and she taught me the word for cheers forever ago, Prost! I also know the words for beer, please, and thank you: Bier, Bitte, and Danke. That’s all you need to know! The other people at our table were a married couple Walter and Pepsi, Alexa, another couple Kristopher and Betty, and their friend who they had run into at Oktoberfest, Lukas. They are all from Stuttgart, I think. Photo three is Luki and Kristopher, Pepsi is in photo four.
We got to stand on the benches and clap and clink glasses, it was fantastic. On the way out I challenged Marko to a shoot out, he kicked my ass and I dropped a lot of F-bombs. As you can see in the last photo, I was pretty drunk but also pretty happy about it. The three of us all had a really wonderful time and I really appreciate Marko not just for coming but also for drinking, even though he has to work all week. I know what it’s like to sacrifice sleep and I’m grateful that my good friends are willing to do such a thing for me. For the record, Marko also made it through 4 liters, so while I didn’t out drink the German, I sure did keep up!
