Galway to Slane

Today we left Ardawn House in Galway, first two pictures are the front room and front door. We got to play with the puppy at the house while we waited for a cab, Shade was her name (shah-day).

I very much like the train and that was our mode of transit back to Dublin! After that I was just planning to ask someone how to get to Co. Meath, which is about 45 minutes north. They recommended the tram to the Busarus station and then to just grab a bus. I hadn’t been able to find any routes to Slane but I didn’t know what else to do so we just took their advice. There was a hurling match at Croke Park in Dublin, which was near our Dublin B&B, and there were loads of people everywhere. Nice to watch! And people were very friendly on the tram and helped us with our luggage and the chair. At Busarus they suggested to go back a stop and take a coach, Collins, to Slane. We did just that and it was a nice ride! Not a bad trip at all.

We are here at the Slane Farm Hostel now and it is definitely in the country and different from everything we’ve seen previously. I sort of feel like we are roughing it.. I thought we were getting breakfast but I’m not so sure now. It also smells like poo, which is fair since we’re on a working farm, and there are spiders too! Yuck. But the people are nice, we get to wash clothes, and it’s cheap so I guess I shouldn’t complain!

Tonight we had dinner at the Conyngham Arms Hotel in town. I thought Erica Frohm would appreciate the photo of the sugar cubes! They give you brown sugar here with coffee and tea. Oh and they eat their fries with mayonnaise. I also had an O’Hara’s beer at Marko’s suggestion. It was very good but a little on the hoppy side for me, I think. Or a little too much of something. But it was crisp and I did like it.

I have been compiling some words to help your Irish accent: Brilliant! Grand! Cheers! Happy days!

The people are so nice here, the only people I didn’t like were the snotty high school age couldn’t be bothered’s in the Lally Tours Offices. They are helpful and very cheery and will always talk to you or answer questions.

Anyway, tomorrow is our tour of Slane with Mr. T. P. Naughton and we will also meet Owen who runs an ancestry office in the city that just opened up not too long ago. Of course I also want to see the Hill of Slane, Slane Castle, and the Hill of Tara.

Cheers!
